Visit to the Ulster American Folk Park!

5th Dec 2025

Our pupils enjoyed an exciting, informative, and engaging day out at the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh.

From the moment they arrived, the children were immersed in the sights and stories of life during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The children loved viewing the Mellon Homestead, where they explored the traditional Irish farmhouse and gained a real sense of how families lived during this period. They also spent time in the old schoolroom and visited the blacksmith’s workshop, watching demonstrations that brought history to life.

One of the highlights of the day was boarding the ship that represented the journey many Irish people took when emigrating to the United States during the famine. As they stepped into the cramped cabins and listened to the stories of those who travelled across the Atlantic, the children were able to relive the emotional and often difficult experience faced by thousands of emigrants.

The journey continued as they explored the American side of the park, discovering what streets and homesteads in Pennsylvania would have looked like.

Walking through these carefully recreated settings helped the children understand the challenges and opportunities that awaited Irish families starting new lives in America.

Overall, the visit was a brilliant and memorable experience. It not only deepened the children’s knowledge of the famine and Irish emigration but also allowed them to connect with history in a meaningful and engaging way.

They returned to school inspired, thoughtful, and eager to continue learning about this important chapter of our past.
