Garden 🪴 Bird 🐦 Food Making Report

14th Jan 2026

Garden Bird Food-Making Report

Today the children were busy making food for our garden birds and had a wonderful, hands-on learning experience. They learned interesting science facts while melting lard, discovering that it becomes a liquid when heated and then changes back into a solid as it cools again. The children focused carefully on these two important words, liquid and solid, and enjoyed seeing the change happen in front of them.

The children also had time to examine the bird seed closely, talking about its different shapes, sizes and textures, before carefully filling pots with seed ready for our garden birds. To help the children learn the names of birds, they have all been given new group names named after our top garden birds.

The six most common garden birds in Northern Ireland that we learned about are the Robin, Blackbird, Blue Tit, Great Tit, House Sparrow, and Chaffinch.

Feeding birds in winter is very important because natural food sources are harder to find. The extra energy from bird food helps birds stay warm and healthy during cold weather. It also supports their survival so they are strong for the spring breeding season.

We had a very successful lesson and are now looking forward to watching the birds feast on this delicious food in our garden.
