Our day out on the Farm 🚜🐄🐴🐥
ȳPrimary 5/6 had a fantastic opportunity this morning to visit two local farms, learning all about beef and dairy farming.
At the Aberdeen Angus farm we met calves and discovered their many stages of development, including how they are fed, how they gain weight and how long they stay on the farm.
The children enjoyed learning about the importance of ear tagging, how many cattle can be accomodated in a pen and why they spend different amounts of time in sheds depending on the weather and season.
Our visit to the dairy farm was equally fascinating. We saw calves that were only a few days old, right through to adult cows being milked by a robotic milking system. The pupils were amazed by the automated calf feeding machine and loved watching the robotic milker in action.
We also learned some incredible facts about dairy farming. The cows produce around 18,000 litres of milk every few days, so its no surprise that each cow drinks around 50 litres of water every day!!
A huge thank you to the Forbes and Quinn families for taking time out of their busy schedule, making us very welcome and giving the children such an engaging and memorable experience.
