P6/7 have had an action-packed start to September and have thrown themselves into their learning with great enthusiasm.
The pupils have particularly enjoyed their novel study of Under the Hawthorn Tree by Marita Conlon McKenna.
As part of this, they have been learning all about the Irish Famine and have shown amazing creativity by using recycled materials to recreate key buildings from the story. Their imaginative work has brought to life Patsy Murphy’s Grocery Shop, the workhouse, the big house, a chapel, thatched cottages, a coffin ship, and even soup kitchens.The children thoroughly enjoyed this task, working together to apply their artistic skills to produce some truly outstanding models.
Alongside their literacy and topic work, the pupils have been busy in numeracy too. They have been exploring place value as well as cubed and square numbers. The challenge of using cubed numbers to build cubes was met with determination and enjoyment, helping the children to apply their learning in practical and creative ways.
The pupils have also been busy supporting the school Eco Council by designing fantastic posters with the important message of saving energy and remembering to turn off lights.
Each poster was full of detail, bright designs, and strong key messages. We are proud of their efforts in promoting sustainability across the school.
Our Friday “Tea and Biscuit” treat has returned and, as always, it has been warmly welcomed! The children really enjoy this reward and look forward to it each week.
In addition, we held our class elections for the School Council this month. Every pupil rose to the challenge, preparing thoughtful entries and delivering clear, confident speeches packed with creative ideas. Well done to everyone for their hard work and effort.
Overall, September has been a hugely successful start to the school year. The pupils have shown fantastic commitment, creativity, and enthusiasm in all that they do. Keep up the excellent work!
