Shopping Games to Develop Numeracy Skills

21st Jan 2026

Shopping Money Games in Primary Three

Primary Three had great fun today playing our shopping-themed money board games. The children loved taking turns, rolling the dice, choosing items to “buy,” and working out the correct coins they needed. There was lots of teamwork, talking, laughing and plenty of super maths thinking!

Playing money games in small groups is a brilliant way to help children develop their mental maths skills. As the children add totals, count out coins, and check each other’s answers, they practise quick recall of number facts and improve their confidence in calculating. Working in a group also encourages discussion about different ways to make the same amount and helps the children explain their thinking out loud.

These activities strengthen the children’s understanding of real-life money concepts too. Handling coins, recognising values, and making simple purchases all help them learn how money works in everyday situations. Through play, the children begin to see the importance of careful counting, checking change, and making sensible choices.

Primary Three worked brilliantly together today - well done, boys and girls!
